Spinnova: More Sustainable than Cotton
Spinnova is the only cellulose-based textile fiber that is made from wood pulp and does not use chemicals at any stage.? This patented spinning technology is based on the mechanical treatment of the pulp, as well as fiber suspension flows and rheology.?It is fully recyclable and directly addresses 5 of the? UN’s 17 sustainability goals for 2030.? Spinnova is a more sustainable solution to synthetic textiles and cotton because it uses zero harmful chemicals, zero waste, and the only side product is water which is re-used in the process. It mitigates the textile’s industry’s effects on global warming and leaves a smaller carbon footprint in the process.
The stretch and strength of the finished fiber are very similar to that of cotton. Depending on the application, it can be functionalized to make the fiber water-repellent or absorbing. The company is looking into converting other problematic waste streams such as agricultural and biowaste into cellulose.
Due to the nature of this innovation, it is still in the pilot phase. It can also be used in wipes, filters, packaging, and medical textiles, as well as bio-composites for different industries.
