The future is bright for biodegradable paints for cars and walls, by having paint grown from bacteria
This process by?Hoekmine BV (MC#983801) creates structural color for paints and coatings based on the modification of bacteria. Flavobacterium, a type of bacteria, produces vibrant colors as it packs together in colonies. This color is not made from pigments, but rather the bacteria’s inherent structure that reflects light at different wavelengths. Genes from flavobacterium are extracted and can be mutated into different colors and hues, ranging from metallic red to blue and from vibrant to subtle by changing the bacteria’s geometry. Due to its?color coming from structural effects rather than pigmentation, this technique is a crucial stepping stone in developing a?biodegradable, non-toxic paint that does not fade over time.
This technique has yet to be achieved on a larger volume scale but the company is open to discussions about scaling up and licensing the process. Applications include paint for cars and walls.
