The First Fully Biodegradable & Biocompatible P3HB Made from Waste Cooking Oil
Unlike bioplastics made from the 1st generation feedstock, this bipolymer (P3HB) is produced from 100% waste cooking oil and does not use crops, or other feedstock, which require the use of agricultural land. The material made by NAFIGATE Corporation a.s. contains no carcinogenic substances or animal products and is free of preservatives, stabilizers, and other toxic additives making it a good fit for sensitive applications such as cosmetics. In addition, waste cooking oil can be used as a source of energy during production, making this biopolymer significantly more affordable than bioplastics made from corn or sugar cane.
The technology is based on a ‘closed-loop’ production system within which the resource input and waste produced are minimized, resulting in about 50% less energy consumption than conventional polyethylene (PE) production.?Furthermore, waste created during the biopolymer production process can also be used as a fertilizer and up to 30% of the phosphorus in the PHA-based fertilizers can be recycled.
Commonly used in packaging to reduce micro-plastics, biopolymers are now entering new industries. Applications for this material include packaging, cosmetics, and smart fertilizers.?Once added to a cosmetics product, the material completely dissolves (biodegrades) in water.
