UbiQD Dots: Quantum Dots that can Harvest Sunlight for Electricity without Sacrificing Aesthetics
UbiQD Dots’ manufacturing process offers a less expensive, non-toxic alternative to today’s quantum dots.?These advanced materials are made with benign elements like copper, zinc, and sulfur, as opposed to the more commonly known toxic ones made from cadmium, lead, or phosphorus. They have low-self-absorption and high-efficiency near-infrared emission, which enable a solar window product. They can be applied as a coating to glass or mixed in with the raw material for plastic windows to harvest sunlight. The company also has a patent for applying the technology to safety (laminated) glass, which is not only used in automobiles but skyscrapers.
Like the previous generation of quantum dots, its color can be tuned using their size to fit many different applications. For example, to absorb different portions of sunlight or tailor a spectrum for indoor lighting. While there are many existing applications for quantum dot technology, the company is exploring new applications such as marketing, safety, and design, such as logos that glow in the sun, paint that shines in car headlights, and fluorescent cosmetics. Other applications in the marketplace include transistors, sunscreen, LCD TVs, smartphones, tablets, lasers, and medicine.
